# How Our Scanner Got Better at Red vs. Orange

> Red and orange look almost the same in a dim room. See how our latest AI update cut red and orange mix-ups by about a quarter.

For a while, we left our camera's color-checking AI alone while we worked on other parts of CubeUnstuck. It was doing fine, so we did not rush to change it.

Last week, we released a new version of that AI. It checks the center color of your cube while you scan.

We hoped for a small boost. What we got was bigger. The scanner is now much better at telling red and orange apart, even in a dim room. This is the hardest color pair for any cube scanner, so we are pretty excited.

Here is what the AI does, how we know it works, and what changed.

> ⚡ **TL;DR: What changed?**
>
> - **Fewer red and orange mix-ups:** This used to be our most common warning. Now it is the third most common. That is about 1 in 4 fewer red and orange false alarms.
> - **Less lamp glare trouble:** Two other mistakes, where white or green looked orange under a warm light, dropped out of our Top 10 list.
> - **Warnings that help:** On our two most common warnings, about 7 out of 10 people tap "Rescan." That means the warning usually spotted a real slip, like turning the cube the wrong way.
>
> **Not perfect yet:** Red and orange can still fool the camera in very dark rooms. A bright, even light helps a lot.

## What Does the Center Color AI Actually Do?

When you scan a 3x3 Rubik's Cube, the center square of each face never moves. White is always opposite Yellow, Green is always opposite Blue, and Red is always opposite Orange.

Because of this rule, our scanner uses an AI model to watch the center square on every step.

1. It knows which color you **should** be holding in front of the camera next.
2. It looks at the center square you are **actually** showing the camera.

If those two colors do not match, the app pauses and gives you a choice. You can hit **Rescan**, or you can hit **Proceed**.

## How We Know If the AI Is Right (Without Spying)

People often wonder how we test our AI across thousands of scans without recording your video or invading your privacy. The answer comes down to how users respond to that Rescan or Proceed prompt.

- **When you tap "Rescan":** It means the AI did its job perfectly! You probably tilted or spun the cube the wrong way by accident, saw the warning, and decided to try again.
- **When you tap "Proceed":** It usually means you really were holding the right side, but poor room lighting tricked the camera into misreading the color.

By looking at which color pairs trigger warnings and seeing which button users press, we can see exactly where the camera is helping and where lighting is confusing it.

## The Villain: Red vs. Orange in Dim Light

As we covered in our deep dive on [why Rubik's Cube scanning is harder than it looks](https://cubeunstuck.com/articles/cube-scanning-challenges/), phone cameras really struggle under warm living room lightbulbs.

In low light, red and orange plastic stickers reflect almost the exact same color to a camera. Even worse, warm indoor glare can make a white sticker look pale orange.

Before our recent update, **Red mistaken for Orange** was the single biggest warning in the entire scanner. It happened even more often than real human rotation mistakes!

## Before vs. After the Update

After two months of careful training, we compared the warning data before and after deploying the new model. The numbers show a huge leap in quality.

| Metric Measured | Before Update | After Update | What This Means |
| :------------------------------- | :----------------------- | :----------------------- | :----------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Red vs. Orange Warning Rank** | **#1** most common | **#3** | It is no longer the top problem in the scanner. |
| **Red vs. Orange Warning Share** | **9.1%** of all warnings | **6.7%** of all warnings | A **26% drop** in red and orange confusion. |
| **White/Green vs. Orange Glare** | Ranked **#6** and **#9** | **Out of Top 10** | Warm lightbulb glare rarely tricks the model into seeing orange anymore. |
| **Top 2 Rotation Checks** | ~58% Rescan rate | **70% Rescan rate** | 7 out of 10 times, the top warnings catch a real human mistake. |

### Why the Top Warnings Now Make Complete Sense

With the annoying orange warnings out of the way, the #1 and #2 most common warnings in CubeUnstuck are now `Green vs. White` and `White vs. Blue`.

Why those specific colors? Because our [3-step scan sequence](https://cubeunstuck.com/articles/quick-scan-guide/) starts with **White on top** and **Green in front**. The most common mistake beginners make on Step 1 is forgetting to tilt the cube down to Green, or tilting it the wrong way toward Blue.

When the new model flags those two cases today, 70% of users immediately tap "Rescan" to fix their grip. That is the exact behavior we want to see. We want fewer false alarms from bad lighting, and reliable catches when you accidentally turn the cube the wrong way.

## Always Getting Better

A Rubik's Cube solver should not stay frozen in time. Phone cameras change, lighting is unpredictable, and weird glitches always pop up.

Even when everything looks quiet on the surface for a couple of months, we are constantly testing behind the scenes. We want to make sure that every time you open CubeUnstuck, your scan feels a little faster, a little sharper, and a lot less frustrating.
