It started with a blunt review on Trustpilot.

A curious user decided to test our website with a simple experiment. They took a solved Rubik's Cube, twisted just one single face, and scanned it into our app. They expected the solver to say, "Turn that one face back!"

Instead, the solver handed them a 15-step solution.

The user was understandably annoyed. Their review called us out directly: why would an app give 15 moves for a cube that only needs one move, or give 50 steps for a cube that only needs 10?

That review stung, but the user was completely right. Many websites use standard solving tools right out of the box. If those tools are not carefully tuned, they try to solve every cube using big, generic formulas instead of looking for simple shortcuts first.

That review kicked off a massive mission. We spent days fine-tuning our solving engine and ran a massive benchmark across 18,293 real scrambles scanned by actual users on our site.

And yes, if you twist just one face on a solved cube today, the solver will immediately tell you to turn it back in exactly 1 move.

Here is what we learned, how the solver works today, and how you can test it yourself.

> ⚡ **TL;DR: How good is the solver now?**
>
> - **Instant Answers:** The solver gives you a working solution in a fraction of a second so your phone never freezes or lags.
> - **Remarkably Short:** Over 91% of our initial solutions are within just 1 or 2 moves of the absolute mathematical limit.
> - **Smart Search Button:** If your cube is already as short as mathematically possible, the app knows it and will not waste your time. If it gives you a 20-move solve, there is a 97% chance you can shave off moves by tapping **"Make solution shorter"**!
> - **No Endless Waiting:** If you choose to search deeper, the app finds shortcuts incredibly fast. Half of all improvements are found in under 1 second.

## The Big Challenge: Speed vs. Move Count

When you scan a scrambled cube with your camera, you want two things that fight against each other:

1. You want the answer **right now** without waiting.
2. You want the **shortest possible number of turns** so you do not have to twist the cube all day.

Here is the catch: a modern desktop computer can check millions of cube positions in the blink of an eye. But if you are using an older smartphone or tablet, forcing the device to search for the absolute shortest sequence can freeze the screen for 10 or even 15 seconds! Nobody wants to stare at a frozen loading circle when they just want to solve their puzzle.

To fix this, we built a smart, two-step process:

- **Step 1:** Give you a great, highly optimized solution almost instantly.
- **Step 2:** If you want an even shorter solution, let you tap a button to run a deeper search safely in the background.

## How Good is the Instant Solution?

To make sure our instant answer is actually high quality, we tested it against a massive dataset of 18,293 real user scrambles.

How did we know what a "perfect" score was? We did not just guess. First, we ran a heavy computer algorithm to calculate the exact, mathematically proven shortest path for every single one of those 18,293 cubes. Then, we tested our instant phone solver to see how closely it matched that perfect number.

Here are the real numbers from that test:

| What We Found | Number of Cubes | Percentage | What It Means in Plain English |
| :--------------------------- | :-------------- | :--------- | :----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Exact Optimal Match (+0)** | 6,504 | 35.6% | The solver found the absolute perfect, shortest possible path on the very first try. |
| **Off by Just 1 Move (+1)** | 5,238 | 28.6% | The solution was just 1 single move longer than the perfect mathematical path. |
| **Off by Just 2 Moves (+2)** | 4,915 | 26.9% | The solution was only 2 moves longer than the absolute mathematical limit. |
| **Off by 3 or More Moves** | 1,636 | 8.9% | The solution had a few extra moves, but was still under 21 total turns. |

### Understanding the Numbers

Think of this like shooting free throws:

- **100% Perfect on Easy Cubes:** If your cube only needs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 moves to solve, our benchmark showed the instant solver found the exact perfect path 100% of the time.
- **Extremely Close on Hard Cubes:** Overall, 64.2% of all solutions are either perfect or just one single move away from perfect.
- **Highly Reliable:** Over 91 out of 100 cubes (91.1%) are within 2 quick moves of perfection.

On average, our instant solver added only **1.1 moves** compared to the best possible path. That means you get an elite solution in a split second.

### Real-World Speed: How Fast is "Instant"?

A human eye takes about 100 to 150 milliseconds to blink. Here is how fast our new engine calculates solutions on real smartphones and tablets across thousands of daily solves:

| Percentile | Speed in Milliseconds | What That Means for You |
| :--------------------- | :-------------------- | :------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **50% of users (P50)** | **~40 ms** | Faster than a single blink of an eye. |
| **80% of users (P80)** | **~140 ms** | Appears virtually the exact moment scanning finishes. |
| **95% of users (P95)** | **~400 ms** | Even on tricky scrambles or older phones, under half a second. |

Because the solver prepares quietly in the background while you finish scanning your cube faces, there is zero loading freeze when you hit solve.

## Want Fewer Turns? The "Make Solution Shorter" Feature

If our first answer is already so close to perfect, why would anyone want to search more?

Because turning a physical cube takes effort! For most people, turning a cube face takes about 1 to 2 seconds. Shaving off 2 or 3 moves saves you real physical turning time.

If your solution can be improved, the app shows a green button at the top: **Make solution shorter**.

When you tap it, the app begins searching in the background:

- It shows you live progress, like `Searching... (5.3s) • 230K ways checked`.
- You can tap `Stop` at any time if you decide you are ready to start turning.
- As soon as it finds a shorter path, it updates your steps and highlights your savings in green, like `STEP 1 / 18 (-1)`!

### Two Rules From Our Data

1. **The 13-Move Rule:** Why does the app sometimes hide the search button? According to our benchmark data, when our fast solver returns a solution of 13 moves or fewer, it is already absolutely perfect 87% to 100% of the time. The app knows this and hides the button so you do not waste time.
2. **The 20-Move Rule:** In the math universe of [God's Number](https://cubeunstuck.com/articles/20-move-optimal/), almost no scrambles actually require 20 moves. If the initial solve gives you 20 moves, it is usually a rough first draft. Our tests show that 97% of 20-move solutions can be shortened by at least 1 move!

## Try It Yourself: Two Fascinating Demos

You do not have to take our word for it. You can open these real scrambles directly in our solver right now and test the search yourself:

### 1. The Famous "Superflip" (21 Drops to 20 Moves)

The Superflip is one of the most famous patterns in Rubik's Cube history. Every corner is perfectly solved, while all 12 edge pieces are in the right spots but incorrectly oriented (flipped backward). It was the first position ever proven to require the absolute maximum of 20 moves. This is one of the hardest positions that exists.

When you open this scramble, the initial solve shows **21 moves**. Tap **"Make solution shorter"**, and watch the solver dig deeper until it hits the famous, mathematically proven **20 moves**!

### 2. The Multi-Drop Jackpot (19 Drops All the Way to 15 Moves)

Most cubes that improve only drop by 1 or 2 moves. But every once in a while, a cube hits the jackpot.

This scramble starts at **19 moves**. If you let the solver search, it finds a series of better paths: dropping from 19, down to 18, then 17, then 16, and finally resting at an incredible **15-move optimal solve**! That is 4 full moves shaved off.

## How Long Do You Need to Wait?

Nobody wants to sit waiting for a computer search forever. We tracked the actual timing data to see how quickly our background search finds shortcuts.

- **Extremely Fast Results:** When a cube can be shortened, the improvement is found almost instantly. Our timing data shows that half of all shortcuts are found in under 1 second.
- **Most Wins Happen Early:** 90% of all improvements are found in under 2 seconds. Once the solver finds a great shortcut, finding a second or third shortcut takes much longer.

Because of this, we set up the solver with two smart rules:

1. **Auto-Stop on First Win:** As soon as the background search finds a shorter answer, it stops right away and shows it to you. You get the win without waiting.
2. **The 20-Second Safety Cap:** Searching takes CPU power. The search will automatically stop after 20 seconds as an emergency brake. This guarantees the search cannot run indefinitely and unnecessarily consume your battery.

## Bonus: The Deep-Dive Data (For Cube Nerds)

How do we know the solver is this good? Because we tracked the data. Here is a simplified look at our 18,000-cube research report, showing how our solver handles different levels of scrambles:

| Instant solve length | Cubes tested | Already perfect on try #1 | Can be shortened |
| ---------------------- | ------------ | ------------------------- | ---------------------------- |
| 1–12 moves | 3,191 | 98% | Only 2% |
| 13–17 moves | 3,849 | About 50% | About 50% drop 1–2 moves |
| 18–19 moves | 7,942 | 16% | 84% drop 1–3 moves |
| 20 moves (rough draft) | 3,310 | Under 1% | 97% drop with a quick search |

## The Takeaway: Why This Solver is Built Differently

That blunt Trustpilot review helped us build what we believe is one of the most highly optimized web solvers available today.

Most other solvers online force you to make a choice. They either give you a sloppy 25-step solution, or they try to find a perfect 20-step solution but freeze and crash your phone's browser in the process.

We fixed that by giving you the best of both worlds. The next time you scan your cube, you can be confident that:

1. **Simple scrambles stay simple:** If your cube only needs 1, 3, or 5 moves, the solver will give you exactly 1, 3, or 5 moves.
2. **Speed without compromise:** Over 91% of our instant solutions are within 1 or 2 moves of mathematical perfection, calculating in just milliseconds.
3. **You are in control:** With the "Make solution shorter" button, you have a smart tool that safely searches for absolute perfection without ever overheating your phone.

We stopped using generic formulas. Whether you are fixing a 1-move accident or tackling a massive 20-move Superflip, our engine is tuned to give you the fastest, shortest, and smartest steps possible.
